Mrs. Margaret Ruth Bennett's Obituary
Margaret Ruth Bennett, age 92, of Muskegon, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2017. She was born on March 13, 1925, to Clarence and Viola (Chipman) Haney in Belding, Michigan. She began her education in Lowell, Michigan, and finished it at Ionia High School where she worked in the school office. There she met her future husband, Ted. On November 6, 1943, she married the love of her life, Theodore Bennett, in Georgia where he was in flight training in the Army Air Corps. During Ted’s tour of duty piloting 35 bombing missions over Europe, his “Muggsie” was doing her duty for the war effort here at AC Spark Plug Company while transporting herself about on his 1939 Knucklehead Harley motorcycle. After his return from his war duties in England, Ted and Margaret were blessed with five children, the first-born, Carol, arriving in 1946. Nancy was born in 1947, and Kevin in 1951, during the time the family lived in Ionia, Michigan. In 1952, they moved their household to Muskegon, where they added David to their family in 1953 and Lorri in 1959. Soon after their move to Muskegon, they joined the congregation at Evanston Avenue Baptist Church where Margaret and Ted served the Lord and remained members until their deaths.
Margaret had a passion for cooking and loved trying and sampling new recipes. She spoiled her family with her cooking and always had plenty of delicious homemade food and an extra place at the table for anyone who happened by at mealtime or anytime. She even listed menu choices. She enjoyed sewing dresses for her young daughters and designed and tailor-made her own dresses later in life. All she did exhibited patience, perfection, and the talent of an artist. No challenge was ever an obstacle to her. She met each one head-on and pondered it and puzzled it out until she found its solution. Margaret was fastidious in her cooking, sewing, problem-solving, her support of others, and in all she did.
Margaret was a special kind of woman who loved everyone, and would do absolutely anything for anyone in need. She always put others before herself. She was very impressed by other people’s knowledge and accomplishments and was ever ready to compliment her family on what they had learned and what they could do. She was very proud of them all. She was a great listener and very humble when it came to her own ideas and abilities.
Margaret is survived by her children, Carol (Rod) Stone of Tennessee, and David Bennett of Muskegon, 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, five great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ted, in 2003, and by her children, Kevin Bennett in 200l, Nancy Haynes in 2010, and Lorri Bennett in 2016. She is loved by all her family and will be missed so much. Matthew 5:8, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."
There will be a graveside gathering at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Please sign the family’s online guestbook at www.sytsemafh.com.
