Margaret G. "Markie" Mellema's Obituary
Mrs. Margaret G. “Markie” Mellema, age 89, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday morning, September 7, 2011, in Grand Haven, Michigan. She was born October 25, 1921 in Muskegon to Nicholas and Martha (‘nee Bos) Veneklasen and had been a life resident of the area. “Markie” was an active member of Unity Reformed Church and formerly of its Dorcus and Lois Circles. On September 16, 1943 she married Peter H. Mellema and he preceded her in death on November 14, 2001, after 58 years of marriage. “Markie” will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister with an engaging smile and wonderful sense of humor. SURVIVORS include 3 sons, John P. and wife Helen of Fremont, David J. and wife Nancy and Daniel M. and wife Debra of Norton Shores; 8 grandchildren, Jon (Rachel), Matthew (Jennifer), Jason, Paul, Eric (fiancée Stacy Sewick), Ryan (Jessica) Mellema, Stacey (Mark) McCord and Sara (August “A.J.”) Christian and 5 great-grandchildren. Markie was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Wilhelmina Medema and Anna Palsrok. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held 12 Noon Saturday at Unity Reformed Church (1521 Porter Rd.) with her cousin, the Rev. Jim Bos, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. VISITATION with “Markie’s” family will be 6 - 8PM Friday at The Sytsema Chapel of Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 737 Apple Avenue, Muskegon, MI 49442 (231-726-5210). For a more lasting memorial, you are asked to consider Western Michigan Christian High School Endowment Trust Fund or Unity Reformed Church.
