Marjorie B. Elwell's Obituary
Mrs. Marjorie B. Elwell, age 91, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the Poppen Residence. She was born on April 15, 1919 in Muskegon to Henry and Frances (Schrouder) Vanderlaan, and resided here her entire life. Mrs. Elwell worked early on for Sealed Power and then for Mona Shores Public Schools. She was a former member of Central Reformed Church and currently at Unity Reformed Church where she was active in both of the Women’s Guilds. Mrs. Elwell enjoyed singing in the choir at Central Reformed, and belonging to the Seekers Sunday School Class, XYZ Senior Group, and the Elizabeth Circle at Unity Reformed. She loved music, reading, traveling on bus trips, camping, enjoying winters in Florida, but above all else loved her family very much. On June 1, 1942 she married Richard “Dick” Elwell and just celebrated 68 years of marriage. Dick survives her along with 3 children, David L. (Virginia) Elwell, Julie Ann (Rev. Burt) Wachter, Richard D. (Maloah) Elwell all of Muskegon; 7 grandchildren, Jilanne (Michael) Marine, Burt (Brenda) Wachter III, Melissa (Christopher) Near, Gregory (Wendy) Elwell, Angela (Peter) Thompson, Joel (Rabecca) Wachter, and Anthony Elwell; 19 great grandchildren; sister, Fern (Chet) Nienhuis of Muskegon; 3 sisters-in-law, Marilyn Vanderlaan, Viola Mattson and Alice (Harvey) Deater. Marge was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Dr. James and Dr. Gordon Vanderlaan, and 1 sister, Phyllis Hammond. The FUNERAL SERVICE will be 4PM Monday at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100 with Rev. Jim Bos officiating. VISITATION will be 1 hour prior to the service, from 3-4 PM. Burial will take place in Norton Cemetery. Memorial Contributions to Unity Reformed Church or the Muskegon Rescue Mission will be appreciated.
