Martin "Marty" Start's Obituary
Mr. Martin "Marty" Start, age 72, of Mears, Michigan and Naples, Florida, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025. He was born on March 28, 1952, in Hart, Michigan, to Robert and Patricia (Michael) Start and served his country in the U.S. Army.
Marty enjoyed a fulfilling career as a computer analyst and worked with Borgess Health before retiring. Marty loved spending time outdoors, basking in the sun, cruising on his boat, and hosting his annual karaoke parties. He was a true enthusiast of cars and a proud Chicago sports fan (aside from being a true blue Michigan Football fan), never hesitating to share his team pride. His lively spirit and warm heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert Start Jr., and his sister Raelynn (Larry) Spinner. Marty is survived by his partner of over 30 years, Laurie Gift; his daughter, Kendra (Ryan) Ortega; his granddaughter, Shylah Dozeman; his sisters, Linda Alsteen and Kathy (Edward) Kruizenga, and his brother, Timothy Start.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Avenue, Grand Haven, MI 49417. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, January 17, 2025, at the same location. Interment will follow at Mears Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Marty's memory may be made to Tri-Cities Kids League or Hospice of Holland.
