Marva J. Schuitema's Obituary
Marva Joan Schuitema, age 90, died peacefully May 8, 2021 in Fruitport. She was born December 5, 1930 in Muskegon to Sam and Alice (VanDyke) Vanderlaan and has been a life resident of the area. Marva had been a teacher’s aide at Wesley School prior to her retirement in 1995. On July 6, 1950 she married Alvin J. Schuitema and he preceded her in death on April 5, 2018. Marva was a member of Unity Reformed Church where she had previously been a Sunday School teacher. She was also very involved in its Couple’s Club, Women’s Circles and led C.R.O.S.S. group Bible study at their home. Marva’s greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother and homemaker. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and time at the cottage. She is survived by 4 of her children: Carl (Debra) Schuitema, Barbara Bennett, Julie (Jeff) Wierengo, Jay (Deb) Schuitema; and daughter-in-law, Sharri Schuitema; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; sister, Carol Springstead; brother, Calvin (Joyce) Vanderlaan and many nieces and nephews. Marva was also preceded in death by her son, Kevin Schuitema; sister, Eunice Meeuwenberg; brothers-in-law Dan Springstead and Mel Meeuwenberg. FUNERAL SERVICES for Marva will be held 11:00am Friday, May 14, 2021 at Unity Reformed Church (1521 Porter Rd., Muskegon, MI 49441) with Pastor David Celeskey officiating. Burial will take place in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. VISITATION will be from 6-8 PM Thursday, at Unity Reformed Church, the evening before the service. Memorial contributions to Unity Reformed Church or Heartland Hospice would be appreciated.
