Mary Ellen Gawron Lund's Obituary
Mary Ellen Gawron Lund, age 93, met her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 6, 2022, peacefully at home. She was born on October 22, 1928 to David and Margaret (Sutter) Strauss in Elk Rapids, MI. She was in the graduating class of 1946 from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic high school in Traverse City, MI. After graduating, she continued her education at Mary Grove College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. On June 20, 1952, she met Julian Gawron at a dance down by the lakeshore at Pere Marquette and it was love at first sight. Two weeks later they were engaged, and they married on August 9, 1952. Together they cherished 51 years full of love, laughter and adventure. Julian preceded her in death on February 23, 2004. Mary later married Robert Lund on October 7, 2006. He preceded her in death on November 11, 2010. She was a faithful follower of Our Lord and was a longtime member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Mary was an active member participating as a lector, CCD instructor, eucharistic minister and was also part of the Legion of Mary, International Bible Study Fellowship and Rosary Society. Mary was a dedicated employee at the Department of Social Services, where she worked as a social worker for 25 years before retiring in 1994. She also enjoyed being part of her community and volunteered her time at hospice facilities. In her earlier years, Mary loved to go on camping trips with her family and spending time outdoors. She was an adventurous woman; road trips to Oregon, white water rafting, and visiting the Grand Canyon were only a few of her many traveling adventures. She also had a love of plays and symphonies and was a season ticket holder for the West Shore Symphony and the Cherry County Playhouse. Above all things, she loved spending time with her family, especially grandchildren. Mary truly enjoyed sharing her recipes and teaching them how to bake delicious desserts. She was a kind woman with the purest heart, who was always willing and able to help others. Her prayer line was always open for those in need. Her faithful and tender-loving spirit will truly be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her 6 children, David Gawron, Joseph (Connie) Gawron, Stan Gawron, Mary Ann (Daniel) Deitz, Theresa (Steven) Dean and Margaret (Chad) Crummel; 7 grandchildren, Abby Gawron, Tony Gawron, Michael (Meghan) Dean, Amber (Justin) Meyers, Crista (Andrew) Dobrowolski, Kevin Deitz and Emily (Greg) Bozik; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, David (Dollie) Strauss and Larry (Sandee) Strauss; 3 sisters, Julie (Fred) Dreves, Eileen (Joe) Edmonds and Elizabeth Rouff; sister-in-law, Millie Strauss; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents; 2 sons, Julian Anthony Gawron Jr in 1974 and Arthur James Gawron in 1982; 2 brothers, Robert Strauss and Allan “Bud” Strauss; and sister-in-law, Karen Strauss. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1716 6th St., Muskegon, MI 49441. A visitation with the family will be held from 6-8:00 PM on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444. A time of sharing and rosary will be held at 7:30PM at the funeral home. Memorial Contribution’s in Mary’s honor can be directed to St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church or Harbor Hospice.
