Mary Elizabeth Hynes' Obituary
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hynes, age 90, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2025 in Muskegon, Michigan, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Howell, Michigan on May 23, 1935 to Walter and Elizabeth (Corbin) McQuillan. She graduated from Howell High School, class of 1953, and was the valedictorian of her class. She received her Bachelor of Education from Michigan State University and Master of Education from Wayne State University. She loved her 25-year career teaching second grade at St. Clare of Montefalco prior to her retirement. On June 14, 1958, Mary married Paul Hynes and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2018. Together, Mary and Paul enjoyed a lovely life, raising their 3 children on the Eastside of Detroit. They were able to retire early and spent 30 years in Gladwin, Michigan in the Sugar Spring community, and nearly 20 years wintering in Scottsdale, Arizona. In her retirement, Mary found a love of art and art classes. She is survived by her children, Kathleen (Andy) McMillan, Phillip (Jill) Hynes, and Maribeth Walker; three grandchildren, Brendan Hynes, Andrew Hynes, and Cruzita Walker; great-grandson, Axl; sister, Barbara Knight; and brother-in-law, Robert Hardy. In addition to her husband, Paul, Mary was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William McQuillan and sister, Dorothy Donahoe. A MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, August 28, 2025 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church - Marian Chapel, 2929 McCracken, Norton Shores, MI 49441. MEMORIALS in memory of Mary may be directed to the Capuchin Retreat House in Washington, Michigan or the Harbor Hospice Foundation, Poppen Residence. Mary’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at DaySpring, the place Mary made a wonderful late-in-life home, Harbor Hospice, and the Poppen Residence for the remarkable care and love they showed to Mary.
