One of my favorite memories of Mary was visiting her at her home around Thanksgiving 1969. She put on a big, delicious Thanksgiving dinner, and I think we were there on Saturday to watch "The Game".
OSU-Michigan 1969: Bo Schembechler's 1st Wolverines team shocks No. 1 Buckeyes, 24-12, earns Rose Bowl berth.
Ever since then, I have been a huge Michigan fan and have watched almost every Michigan football game.
Mary reminded me of our grandmother, Margaret Hornbeck. Mary just lit up the room with her smile, her joy, and her love of life. Everything was so exciting to her, and she loved us all.
I have lived in St. Petersburg, Florida since 1977. Occasionally, she and Carl would visit me during the winter.
Two years ago, around the time of my 50th high school reunion in Muskegon, I called Mary and asked if we could meet. She said: "Yes!" And, we met at the Bear Lake Tavern with Carl and Ginger. That again was a joyful time as we caught up with each other's news. That was the last time I saw her, and she again just lit up the room with her smile, her joy, and her love of life.
I send my love and condolences to sister Ginger Austin, husband Carl Luther, children Libby Turner, Lindsey Rosen, Andrew Yeager, stepsons Matt Luther, Andy Luther, and the rest of the family. - from her cousin Bill Hornbeck.
