Mary M. Schaefer's Obituary
Mary M. Schaefer, age 94, passed away Friday evening, March 6, 2009. She was born April 5, 1914 in Muskegon, to John and Anna (Kocian) Jagos. Mary resided in Muskegon most of her life. On September 9, 1939, she married Walter G. Schaefer, who preceded her in death on April 5, 1970. Mary is also preceded in death by her sister Julie, brother Emery, her son Paul and daughter-in-law Patricia.
Mary is survived by son, John (Kathleen); grandchildren, John (Theresa) of Fruitport, Jennifer (Louis) Myers of Zeeland, Jeremy of Chicago, Illinois and Erika of Billings, Montana; three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Simon and Mason.
Mary is best remembered for her love of family. She expressed much of her love for them in her kitchen baking cookies, making jam, and preparing traditional Old World dishes. She could often be spotted walking with a friend near Mona Lake every morning while praying the rosary.
Mary worked at The Norge in the early days of her life and finished her working career with the Mona Shores High School lunch program. She was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Altar Guild and Catholic Daughters. She was also a member of First Catholic Men’s Slovak Union. Mary volunteered her time at Muskegon Red Cross (35 years), Hackley Hospital Gift Bar, Mercy Auxiliary, and also with the Mona Shores Seniors.
Mass will be held 11AM Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation and sharing of memories will be held one hour before Mass, from 10-11 AM.
