Matt S. Olsen's Obituary
Matthew “Matt” Stephen Olsen, age 41, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024 after a brave three-and-a-half year battle with colon cancer. In the midst of our sadness, we also rejoice that he is with His Savior and a body that is fully healed and restored. Matt had a unique presence that was known and loved by all who knew him. He carried an infectious energy and a contagious and warm smile, befriending anyone he encountered. From the age of 16 on, he worked in the family business with his grandfather, father, uncle, and cousin. Matt graduated from Reeths-Puffer High School and Grand Valley State University. He had a deep love for the beach and the water and was an avid surfer and boater. In August of 2017, Matt courageously survived a surfing accident on Lake Michigan, after managing to climb onto his board even with a broken femur. Matt also enjoyed skiing and golfing, and he did all of these activities with the many friends who loved him. He was a lover of life and demonstrated the importance of having fun each and every day. He faced many challenges over the last 3 years with an attitude of perseverance and determination. Matt marched to the beat of his own drum, and this is what made him so lovable and likeable. He had his own sense of humor, and he loved to crack jokes. He was often seen in his board shorts and collection of tie-dye shirts. He fit the title “surfer dude” to a T. Matt was an amazing and loving uncle to his nephew, Parker. He loved spending time with him and showing him all of the outdoor fun that West Michigan has to offer. He will be deeply missed by his family and so many friends near and far. Matt is survived by his loving parents, Steve and Deb, his sister, Sara Henry, and his nephew, Parker Henry as well as his aunts, uncles, cousins, and many good friends. A Private Celebration of Matt’s Life is being planned. To make a donation in Matt’s memory, please consider The Harbor Hospice Foundation or the Boys and Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore.
