Meryl Jerome Slover's Obituary
Mr. Meryl Jerome Slover, age 99, of Spring Lake passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016. Meryl was born on June 22, 1916 in Xenia, Illinois to John M. Slover and Anna (Edgington) Slover. He moved to the Muskegon area in his early adulthood.
Meryl was a WWII veteran having served in the US Army in Europe. He was part of the 391st Field Artillery serving as a radio man in the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his discharge, he trained to be a barber and operated Slover’s Barber Shop on Savidge Street in Spring Lake for 35 years. After retirement, he loved gardening, attending his grandsons’ school activates, taking social dance classes, and traveling throughout the US and the world. He was a member of Christ Community Church and First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 73 years Ethel (Werly) Slover, his son, Gary (Barbara) Slover, and two grandsons, John (Meredith) Slover and Michael Slover, all of Grand Haven. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Floral Greenwalt, Hubert Slover, Kenneth Slover and Jewel Davis.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Monday, April 18, 2016 at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Peter Theune officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post # 28 Honor Guard. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Lake Forest Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Meryl may be given to First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven.
