Deer season is a Michigan holiday. During my early teenage years every time fall came I knew it was time for our yearly trip to deer camp and my father and I would drive up to Mike’s Cabin in Ruby Creek for a weekend of fun. I vividly remember setting up my Xbox on a little 14 inch television in either the living room or the guest bedroom and playing games up there while Mike and my dad hung around in the living room sharing stories with each other. I remember how hot Mike always kept the wood stove in there and how dry the air always was but I never complained I was having fun with Mike and Dad. As morning came I would wake up with my dad and Mike and I’d eat a few cookies before we went out on our morning hunt (I was lucky enough to shoot my very first buck from Mikes deer blind my dad always called the Taj Mahal because of how nice it was). Whether we got anything or not Dad and I would stay out until 9:30 or 10:00 and we’d make our way back to the cabin where Mike would have breakfast started coffee mug in hand as he stared out the window above the sink looking at a corn feeder where the birds would hangout and occasionally a deer would come through. We’d all eat breakfast and have a good number of laughs and we’d all look forward to the evening hunt. I look back on those days so fondly and hold them close to my heart especially now.
