Michael William Pohl's Obituary
Mr. Michael William Pohl, age 79, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2025 surrounded by his family in Grand Rapids, Michigan (Meijer Heart Center). Mike was born at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, Michigan on October 1, 1945 to William “Bill” and Stella (Lawrence) Pohl. Mike, a Western Michigan University graduate, retired from General Motors. A lifelong entrepreneur (the original American PICKER) Mike restored antique furniture while living in Dimondale, Michigan and also opened an ice cream parlor along the river. Later in life, Mike called South Haven home, living along the Black River and fishing in the waters of Lake Michigan. Mike’s spirit drove him to invest in multiple ventures with friends and business partners, including purchasing and reopening “Beach Bums”, a small ice cream sandwich shop along the river downtown. Mike was a lifelong “antique-flea market” shopper. He acquired many wonderful collections, including a massive Cast Iron collection, that brought him great joy. Mike’s final years were spent in Montague, Michigan residing on family property. Mike’s favorite past times were trivia nights at Jimmy’s Pub, chicken wing night at Pub 111, and spending time with his many friends who became extended family. One of Mike’s greatest sense of pride was his grandchildren. He greatly enjoyed the time he spent with them and was proud of each of them. He was also known to brag about them to friends and family every chance he got. Michael is survived by his sons, Michael (Tami) Pohl and Matthew (Rachel) Pohl; grandchildren, James (Tori) Pohl, Jacob (Carly) Pohl, Keith Reuterdahl, Laura Reuterdahl, and Addison Pohl; one great-grandson, Rowan; sisters, Cathy (Gary) Neuman-Ritsema and Judy Schmactenberger; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dan Pohl; sister, Nancy Pohl; and brother-in-law, Neil Schmactenberger. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Arrangements by The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey St. Norton Shores, MI 49444.
