Michael J. "Mike" Schalk's Obituary
Michael J. Schalk, age 67, passed away Monday, July 13, 2015. He was born December 28, 1947 in Muskegon to Jerry and Adeline (Ziebell) Schalk. Mike worked as an auto mechanic at Joe’s Friendly Service for 28 years before retiring in 1997. He played baseball and football for the Muskegon Big Reds, was a City of Muskegon Life Guard, and captain of the Lindback Distributing bowling and softball teams. Mike also played hockey for the Muskegon Junior Zephyrs and the Western Michigan University Bronco hockey team. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and especially enjoyed the spring when he would take fishing trips to Canada with his “Canadian” friends. Mike belonged to the White River Steelheaders, where he had been secretary and treasurer for many years and was also co-chairman of the Perch Festival. He was a member of the Muskegon Eagles and donated many hours of time to the Boy Scouts of America and the Salvation Army. In his later years enjoyed camping with family and friends. On July 18, 1992 he married Judy Jibson in Muskegon and she survives him along with 2 children: Matt (Fran) Schalk and family of Ferndale, MI, Mindy (Jon) Geer of Caladonia, MI; and 2 grandchildren: Grace and Grant Geer. According to Mike’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date.
