Mildred Clanton's Obituary
Mildred Underwood Clanton, a native of Doddsville and Sunflower Mississippi, born September 15, 1944, to the late Rev. Ambers and Emma Alberta Underwood. She transitioned peacefully Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at 10:35p.m. Mildred was the youngest of fifteen children. She was raised in the Mississippi Delta. She accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of 8 at New Bethlehem Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Roosevelt Dentmon. Mildred was a 1963 graduate of Gentry High, Indianola, Mississippi.
She moved to Muskegon, Michigan in 1964, and joined the Bethesda Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Charles W. Poole Sr. She remained a faithful member serving as a Sunday School teacher and a member of the music ministry, until her health failed. She met and married the love of her life Carl Clanton on May 4, 1968. She was a devoted and compassionate certified nurse’s assistant for over 40 years. She served in this capacity at Mercy Hospital, Visiting Nurses, and Hackley Hospital until retiring in 2008.
Mildred was known as a woman with a strong work ethic, who was very caring, witty, extremely brave and a woman of great faith. She believed God does the impossible and He performed countless miracles throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; seven brothers: Floyd Hughes, Claude Hughes, James Hughes, LC Hughes, Otha Lee Underwood, Ambers Underwood Jr. and Alonzo Hughes; seven sisters: Daisy Nicholson, Maggie Simth, Velma Hubbard, Dorothy Smith, Alberta Harris, Elizabeth Underwood, and Delia Brinston; one great granddaughter: Nova Rae Clanton. She leaves to cherish her memories, her children: Dexter (Amy) Clanton and Donata (Raymond) Kidd of Muskegon Michigan; grandchildren Latia Willis, Micah (Summer), Eric, Julian (Chasadie), India, and Jalen Clanton; seven great-grandchildren: Jordan Jr. and Jhalil Willis, Emery, Elle, Ellis, Esch, and Jullian Clanton II; and a multitude of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 1, 2023, at Bethesda Baptist Church. Visitation will be held 5-7 PM Thursday, November 30, 2023, at The Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 737 E. Apple Ave, Muskegon, MI 49442 and one hour prior to the service at church.
