MiLola M. Hannahs' Obituary
MiLola M. Hannahs passed away at home surrounded by her family on Monday, August 2, 2021 in the prime of her life at 101 years old. She was born on September 29, 1919 to Loren and Myrtle Carrick in Fruitport, MI. Lola worked at Stanco Products (formerly Peerless Novelty) for 40+ years and retired in 1995 at the age of 75.
She married Donovan Hannahs on September 4, 1942 and they spent 56 years together before his passing in 1998. She is survived by her 4 sons: Lonnie D. Hannahs of Norton Shores, Michael L. (Nancy) Hannahs of Fremont, Richard W. (RuthAnn) Hannahs of Florida, and Lorren E. (Jackie) Hannahs of Norton Shores; 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Bonnie Hackney and Carola Pringle.
She had a great love of gardening and wildlife. Lola and her husband spent many years in the Upper Peninsula and Pentwater at the cottages and cabins they owned at various times. They crossed Lake Michigan by ferry and watched the Mackinaw Bridge being built.
Their ventures started in the early 1950’s when they bought a lot on Bass Lake near Pentwater. With the help of family and friends, they cleared the land and built a cottage. Before that was completed, they bought a primitive log cabin in the UP which they rebuilt for a hunting and fishing cabin. They raised 4 boys that helped with the family projects from early on. Whenever they traveled, there was always room for a couple more friends. Eventually they purchased a farm home in Gulliver in the UP when they divided their time between Muskegon and the UP.
One favorite activity was smelt dipping and frying fish for family and friends at their cabin or on the riverbank. She also took great enjoyment in decorating her yard for Halloween and Christmas. The large lighted spruce tree in her yard could be seen from blocks away.
Everyone knew Grandma Hannahs’ house was the place to stop for chips, pop, and ice cream. It didn’t matter if you were a neighbor, kid, relative or relative’s co-worker, everyone was welcome.
A Celebration of Life Open House will be held Saturday, August 28, 2021 from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the Roosevelt Park Community Center on the corner of Roosevelt and Glenside. There will be no visitation.
Memorials: American Heart Association of Michigan or Lakeshore Lung Society.
