Mona L. Sutherland-Scouten's Obituary
Mona Lou Sutherland-Scouten, 86, of Twin Lake, MI passed away unexpectedly at home on November 18, 2022. Mona was born in Hesperia, MI on July 26, 1936. She married Robert Sutherland at the age of 16 and was married to him for 48 years. They had five children together and enjoyed camping and snowmobiling. After his death, God brought Gary Scouten and his eight adult children into her life. They married and enjoyed 17 years of marriage together. They loved walks on the beach, watching sunsets together, and trips to Mackinac Island.
Mona was an amazing woman who loved her family unconditionally and her Savior unwaveringly. She enjoyed spending time sharing stories and laughing with her family and friends; her contagious smile lit up every room. She loved people and prayed daily and passionately for her family, friends, church, and nation.
Mona was hard-working, feisty, and determined. Although she received her GED as a teenager, she returned to high school as an adult and graduated with her diploma from Reeths-Puffer High School in 1980. She was a school bus driver, waitress, and also worked in the retail industry. She eventually retired from Howmet after nearly 20 years of service in 1999.
Mona was very talented and creative. She began painting later in life and became an accomplished artist whose paintings were displayed and sold in several art galleries. She knitted, crocheted, and made quilts with intricate needlework in beautiful patterns. Mona also loved music and learned to play the piano, which was one of her favorite pastimes. She also displayed her creativity and appreciation for God’s creation through her beautiful and extensive gardening. Both of these hobbies brought her peace in the midst of a chaotic world.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and George Chester, her first husband, Robert Sutherland and her second husband, Gary Scouten, her son, Timothy Sutherland, sons-in-law Richard (Dick) Follett and Randy Robinson, brothers Louis (Sonny) Chester, Arthur (Jeannie) Chester, Robert (Muriel) Chester, Albert (Barbara) Chester, David “Gene” Chester (Maudie) and sisters Marie (Leonard) Eyestone, Ruth Brooks, Marjorie (David “Butch”) Watkins. She leaves behind her son, Daniel Sutherland, daughters LuAnn (Brian) Goodall and Debra Robinson, and son, Benjamin (Mary) Sutherland, six step-sons and two step-daughters, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
