Mr. Joseph C. Gilmore, Sr.'s Obituary
Mr. Joseph C. Gilmore, age 92, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2011 in Muskegon. He was born in Muskegon on September 14, 1919 to James and Rhoda (Mee) Gilmore. Mr. Gilmore was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp and served in WWII. He had been employed over 40 years by AJ Vallier Incorporated and retired as a painting supervisor. After retiring, Mr. Gilmore continued painting independently all over the greater Muskegon area well into his 80’s. He was an active member and vital leader of Fruitland Covenant Church since 1969. Mr. Gilmore was a past member of the Duck Creek School Board, a past Election Supervisor for Fruitland Township, a member of the Muskegon Gem and Mineral Association and a life-member of the Don Rea VFW Post #8846. Mr. Gilmore was a painter by trade, but considered himself an artist. He had a special talent for not just painting, but creating specific atmospheres in each job he did. Mr. Gilmore enjoyed collecting rocks and turning the stones into beautiful pieces of jewelry. Most importantly, he loved his family and was very proud of them. On January 24, 1946, Joseph married the former LaVerle Shaffer in Muskegon and she preceded him in death on April 23, 2011. He is survived by 3 children, Nancy (Ken) VanDyke, Joseph (Cam) Gilmore, Jr. and William (Ruth) Gilmore; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; 1 daughter, Diana Lynn Gilmore; 1 brother and 1 sister. SERVICES will be 11:00AM Saturday at Fruitland Covenant Church (4283 N. Weber Rd.) with Rev. Brian Kyle officiating. VISITATION will be from 4-7PM Friday at The Sytsema Chapel, 737 Apple Ave. 231-726-5210. INTERMENT will be in Fruitland Township Cemetery. MEMORIALS to Mercy VNS Hospice or to Fruitland Covenant Church Memorial Fund would be appreciated.
