Mrs. Joyce Arlene VanderLey's Obituary
Mrs. Joyce Arlene VanderLey, age 73, passed away Wednesday evening, July 27, 2011 at her home. She was born February 2, 1938 in Muskegon to Ludwig Christian and Elaine Evelyn (Douglas) Sorensen. Joyce had spent most of her life in the Muskegon area, moving to Hesperia in 1973. On November 12, 1954, Joyce married Kenneth VanderLey in Muskegon and he survives her. She had worked as an accounting clerk for Hendon and Slate for 12 years prior to her retirement in 2000. She had also worked for Nordco Drum Co. and Mitchell and Torey, C.P.A. Joyce was a brain cancer survivor. She enjoyed baking and working in the garden. Joyce is survived by her husband of 56 years, Kenneth; 3 children, Marilyn VanderLey of Madison, WI, James VanderLey of Hesperia, and Laura (Leon) Alvesteffer of Hesperia; her mother, Elaine Sorensen of Hesperia; 4 grandchildren, Michael Maynard of Indianapolis, IN, Aichia Amiri of Madison, WI, Tarik Amiri of Madison, WI, and Joshua Hanes of Ravenna; 3 great grandchildren, Jackson, Olivia, and Violet Maynard; 1 brother, James (June) Sorensen of Ludington, MI; 3 sisters, Sandra Sorensen of Hesperia, Judith (Tom) Mohr of Crystal Valley, MI, and Carol (Ben) Simpson of Arizona; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 1, 2011 at The Sytsema Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Ave. 231-726-5210 with Pastor John Brown officiating. VISITATION will be Sunday afternoon from 2-5 PM at the funeral home. INTERMENT will be in Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
