Muriel Medema's Obituary
Mrs. E. Muriel Medema, age 90, passed away Friday July 22, 2011. Mrs. Medema was born September 21, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois to Wesley and Marie Thompson and resided in the area all of her life. She was a member of Unity Reformed Church and a member of the church choir, Artis Nummerdor’s CROSS Group and Elizabeth Circle. Muriel also volunteered at MAP and was president of the Bluffton PTA when the new school was built. She loved the Bluffton area and lived there for 65 years, from 1922–1987. Mrs. Medema was a Supervisor of the Parts Department at the Norge for 19 years, 4 years for Sealed Power and 10 years at LOVE, INC. before retiring in 1980 at the age of 83. Muriel enjoyed crocheting, crafts, and traveling out west to see her daughters. On January 6, 1968, she married Jay Medema, and together spent 24 years together, before he preceded her in death on July 2, 1992. SURVIVORS include 3 daughters, Karen (Sam) Waalkes of Bellevue, WA, Cherie (Philip) Colgan of Kennewick, WA, Mari-Lee (Roger) McKee of Muskegon; son-in-law, Jerry Hamstra; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ernest Medema; sister-in-laws, Marlene Eller, Jeanette Nummerdor, Josephine (Bud) Beauchamp; and special friend, Lynn Torrent. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Darlene Hamstra in 2011; and grandson, Rollie VanHemert in 1983. SERVICES will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday July 26, 2011 at Unity Reformed Church with Rev. James Bos officiating. VISITATION with the family will be 1 hour prior, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery. Memorial Contributions to Unity Reformed Church Choir or Medical Fund for MAP will be appreciated.
