Neil A. Hawryliw's Obituary
The ice was thin, the road was long, my life on earth is now done. I leave behind my family and friends to share their memories, until we meet again.
Neil A. Hawryliw, age 65, passed away Sunday, October 3, 2021. He was born November 19, 1955 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Bohdan and Eileen (Bandurka) Hawryliw. Neil was signed as a Free Agent with the New York Islanders during their dynasty years and made his NHL debut during the 1981-82 NHL season and returned to the Indianapolis Checkers where he was a member of the 1982 Adams Cup Championship Team. Neil finished his illustrious career with the Kalamazoo Wings in 1987. On August 16, 1982, he married the former Joni L. Miller in Saskatoon, Canada. After he started his family, he decided his family came before hockey, so they made the move back to Muskegon where he concluded his career. After retiring from hockey, Neil became the director of operations at the L.C. Walker Arena for 31 years. He was a member of the Vikings Linne Lodge #57, the Muskegon Elks Lodge #274, and also loved golfing at many of the local golf courses with his buddies. Neil is survived by his wife, Joni; son, Nigel Hawryliw; brother, Fred Hawryliw of Calgary, Canada; and numerous extended family in Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to Neil’s wishes, there will be no services. MEMORIALS to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Neil’s memory will be appreciated.
