Nellie Balkema's Obituary
Mrs. Nellie (DeWind) Balkema, age 86, passed away Friday, May 1, 2009 in Muskegon. She was born July 18, 1922 to Henry and Ida (Cooper) DeWind and had lived her entire life in the Muskegon area. Prior to retirement, Nellie enjoyed a 40-year banking career that included 20 years at Hackley National Bank. She was a member of Fifth Reformed Church. SURVIVORS include her children, Barbara L. Smith of Traverse City, Mary E. Hyrns of Muskegon, Pamela S. (Paul) Vanderlinde of Cedar, MI, Bruce D. Balkema of Carmichael, CA; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; brother- and sisters-in-law, Lucille DeWind, Nina DeWind, Art and Delores Burkell. Nellie was preceded in death by her son, Danny L. Balkema; her parents; 4 brothers, George, Jack, John and Dick DeWind; and 2 sisters, Agnes Dykema and Anna MacAffe. In honoring Nellie’s wish, there will be private family services. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS in lieu of flowers may be directed to DeBoer’s Nusring Home or the Alzheimer’s Association.
