Nels Lamont Peterson's Obituary
Nels Lamont Peterson, age 86, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at The Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence in Muskegon, MI. He was born March 7, 1938, in Muskegon Heights, to Nels Peter and Beatrice (Schwass) Peterson. He graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1956 and then served his country in the United States Navy. Upon returning from his service in the military, he attended the former Muskegon Business College obtaining an associate degree. On November 7, 1959, he married Mearlene (Micki) Hamilton and they were able to spend 65 years together. Nels was a Superintendent in charge of transportation for Sealed Power for 22 years. He then spent time offering his transportation expertise to other organizations.
Nels liked to visit the family dairy farm. He also enjoyed boating and spending time on Lake Michigan. He was proud of his service in the Navy and appreciated anything Navy related. He was a history buff and enjoyed learning and talking about the history of Muskegon. Nels was a skilled craftsman who enjoyed helping friends and family build their homes. He was a devoted husband and father and loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren.
Nels will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Mearlene; children, Nels L. Peterson II and Michelle Peterson; daughter-in-law, Lisa Peterson; grandchildren, Dillon (Amanda) Grimm, Damon (Hailey) Grimm and Audra Peterson; great grandchildren, Braiden, Kaizen, Isaac and Kennedy Grimm; brother, Douglas (Frances) Peterson; and sister, Eldonna Lay. He is preceded in death by his parents and son, Scott Peterson.
The family will hold a PRIVATE GRAVESIDE SERVICE and no visitation will be held. To honor Nels, MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or Every Woman’s Place in Muskegon.
