Nicholas G. Stathas' Obituary
Nicholas G. “Nick” Stathas, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 in Grand Rapids. He was born in Muskegon on September 11, 1931 to George and Bessie Stathas and was a life-long resident. Nick was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. On May 21, 1966, he married Fanouria “Rita” Filias in London, Ontario, Canada and she su rvives him. Nick worked as a manufacturing engineer in the Muskegon area and retired after 16 years with Haworth Corp. Nick was a life-long active member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church where he served previously as president. He also began the Iconography Project for the church and was past president of AHEPA. Nick volunteered as a mentor for Junior Achievement. He enjoyed golfing and fishing, but he was most proud of his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Rita Stathas; 3 children, Kellie (Frank) Pena, Andrea Dadd, George (Barbara) Stathas; 6 grandchildren, Daniel Pena, Alexis Pena, Gabriel Garvey, Nicholas Garvey, Jacob Stathas, and Samuel Stathas. He was preceded in death by his parents. The Orthodox Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated 1:00 PM Saturday, October 26, 2019 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church (185 E. Pontaluna Rd., Norton Shores) with Father John Sakellariou presiding. Visitation will be held 6-8 PM Friday at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey St, Norton Shores, MI 49444. The Trisagion Service will be prayed at 7:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Mona View Cemetery.
