Norman G. Mertz's Obituary
Norman G. Mertz, age 92, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2022. He was born June 14, 1930 in Muskegon to Leon and Alice (Dewitt) Mertz and had been a resident most of his life. Norm was a graduate of Muskegon High School and following graduation enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Wright aircraft carrier. On May 21, 1960, he married the former Shirley Marie Christian in Muskegon, and she preceded him in death on August 11, 2015. Norm was a police officer for 35 years for the City of Roosevelt Park prior to his retirement in 1996. He was a member of McGraft Congregational Church now Port City Church – McGraft Campus. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Muskegon Heights Eagles, and served on the Roosevelt Park City Council. Norm loved to sail and was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, as well as the Green Bay Packers. SURVIVORS include four children: Beth Mertz of Roosevelt Park, Michele (David) Veyera of Ladson, SC, Todd (Sara) Mertz of Columbus, OH, and Scott Mertz of Redondo Beach, CA; three grandchildren: Nickolas Labath, Cameron (Ariel) Mertz, and Regan Mertz. A celebration of Norm’s life will be held 2:00 PM Friday, September 9, 2022 at The Walburn Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 1547 W. Sherman Blvd., Muskegon, MI 49441 (231) 759-8565. VISITATION will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Muskegon Big Red Athletic Foundation will be appreciated.
