Ottolena (DeHorn) VanAndel's Obituary
Ottolena (DeHorn) VanAndel died on September 21, 2019 at her home after a long confinement.
Ottolena was born in Muskegon on January 26, 1919, to Arie and Marie (VanBrulgel) DeHorn, and married John VanAndel in 1946.
She and John owned and ran the VanAndel Hardware on Terrace Street in Muskegon, until his death in 1967. She then worked as an inventory clerk at Hardware Distributors, Inc. until retiring in 1997. She was a life-long member of the Christian Reformed Church, attending East Muskegon CRC until it closed, then attending Allen Avenue CRC.
Ottolena liked working with her hands, doing ceramics, needle crafts, china painting, and making quilt tops. But most of all, Ottolena enjoyed spending time with her family—watching the grandkids and great-grandkids after school, attending sporting and musical events, and cooking Sunday dinners. She will be sorely missed.
Ottolena is survived by: her two daughters, Marie (Charles) Ritchard and Carol (David) VanAndel-Forbes; grandchildren Erin (Ritchard) and Nate Studer, Chad and Hope (Denton) Ritchard, Leah Forbes, and Ian Forbes; great-grandchildren Kyler, Lena, Weston, and Jax Studer, Ivy and Rose Ritchard, and Callie (Forbes) Hansen.
A memorial service in celebration of Ottolena’s life and legacy will be held at Allen Avenue Christian Reformed Church on Wednesday, September 25th, at 11:00 am. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Memorial gifts in her name should be sent to Muskegon Christian School, Western Michigan Christian High School, or Harbor Hospice.
