Mr. Patrick Porter's Obituary
Mr. Patrick Porter died peacefully in the Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center on March 2nd, 2015 in Walsenburg, Colorado at the age of 73.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Jane Porter of Nunica, Michigan; children, Amy Dupont of Nunica, Michigan and Justin Porter of Austin, Texas; sister, Marianne Houseman of Muskegon, Michigan; brother Michael Porter of Muskegon, Michigan; and grandchildren Patrick Dupont, and Emily Dupont both of Nunica, Michigan. Patrick is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Raymond Porter of Muskegon, Michigan; brothers Jackie Porter of Muskegon, Michigan and Terry Porter, of Grand Haven, Michigan; son-in-law Steven Dupont of Nunica, Michigan; brother-in-law Virgil Houseman of Muskegon, Michigan; sister-in-law Sandra Porter of Grand Haven, Michigan; mother and father-in-law Harry and Sue McComb of Walkerville, Michigan; and brother-in-law Bill McComb of Muskegon, Michigan.
Patrick was born on April 6th, 1941 in Muskegon, Michigan. He graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1959 and married his wife of 50 years on April 24th, 1965. The couple welcomed two children into their home and Patrick set about instilling in them his passion for horses and the sport of rodeo. His children remember their father as a man who was quick to joke and maintained his sense of humor even during difficult times.
Patrick was an accomplished team roper, calf roper, and bull rider, winning the MCA bull-riding championship in 1964. He was a dedicated grandfather who could be relied upon to be in the audience at the numerous sporting and extra-curricular events in the Fruitport Community Schools in which his grandchildren were involved.
Patrick worked for Brunswick Corporation of Muskegon, Michigan for 37 years before retiring. In retirement he volunteered for the Red Cross, judged rodeos for Superkicker Rodeo Productions, and enjoyed spending time at his mountain cabin in Gulnare, Colorado.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 28, 2015 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100, with Father Philip Witkowski officiating. VISITATION will be 6-8 PM Friday evening and 1 hour prior to the service (10-11 AM). All are welcome to attend and celebrate Patrick’s life. The family would like to thank the many caregivers and medical professionals, in particular Dr. Robert Hylland, who worked to ease Patrick’s suffering during his long-term struggle with rheumatoid arthritis.
