Peggy (Asquith) Atkin's Obituary
Peggy (Asquith) Atkin was born in the Rotherham District of England, May 9th, 1932 to the late Harriet Grace (Tracey) and Albert Asquith. She was the older sister to Derek. She attended school and spent much of her early life in Swallownest. In October of 1958, she married Brian Atkin, and they started their family in Sheffield, England with the arrival of their son, Dale, in 1963. Shortly thereafter, they immigrated to Detroit, MI for a chance at a better life in the U.S. Their daughter, Kelly, made her debut in 1966. As their family grew, they moved out to a nearby suburb, Livonia, MI, where their third child, JoAnn, was born in 1971. Peggy spent the majority of her life devoted to her husband, children, and later, her grandson Corey Atkin, and fostered lifelong friendships with many neighbors and co-workers.
Peggy was an avid gardener and neighbors would often see her planting and watering her flowers, trimming bushes, and even mowing the lawn. She loved to be outside in the fresh air having her morning or evening tea. Her home was a staple in the Castle Gardens neighborhood, where her children’s friends would spend their summer afternoons swimming in the pool. Peggy loved dogs and always had a treat for those that passed by on their morning walks or ran along the backyard fence. She also greatly enjoyed watching and cheering on her Detroit Red Wings - she had a big crush on #14 Brendan Shanahan and she always had to share that she and long-time captain, now General Manager, Steve Yzerman, had the same birthday. And, if you were ever in need, you could always count on an extra $20 hidden in the “secret” teapot for a spontaneous McDonald’s run or to fill your gas tank.
She is survived by her children, Dale Atkin, Kelly (Brian Szalanski), and JoAnn (Dan Munson), and grandson Corey Atkin. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 45 years Brian, and her brother Derek. She will be missed by any and all who knew her generous spirit, laugh, and British accent.
Peggy’s family would like to express its gratitude for the love and care given to her by the staff of Harbor Hospice Poppen House Residence during her final months. A Celebration of Life will take place Noon-4PM on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Karl's Cabin Restaurant and Banquets, 6005 Gotfredson Road, Plymouth, MI 48170 (www.karlscabin.com).
