Phillip C. Smith's Obituary
Mr. Phillip C. Smith, age 73, of Grand Haven passed away Thursday, March 28, 2019. He was born January 17, 1946 in Scranton, Pennsylvania to Charles and Elaine (Horrigan) Smith. On October 18, 1980 he married Nancy Olsen in Homewood, Illinois.
Phil was a Sargent in the United States Air Force for 20 years serving in both Vietnam and Desert Storm before retiring in 1991. He then went on to serve in the Illinois Air National Guard and was a superintendent at the Tera Verde Golf Course. Phil was a member of the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post 28 where he served as a commander and was a member of the honor guard. He was also a member of the VFW Post 2326. Phil enjoyed boating, golfing and bowling. He loved spending time in his garden, cooking and watching the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and Michigan State. Phil had a heart for people and would be the first to lend a hand to anyone in need. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and comrades.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sister, Wendy Doty; nephews: Brandon Doty, Kyle (Nikki) Doty, Erik (Jessica) Doty; nieces: Katie (Jon) Passantino, Kristie Landan, Maria Pickell and all of their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elaine.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, April 6, 2019 at The VanZantwick Chapel (620 Washington Ave). Visitation will be held 6-8 PM Friday, April 5, 2019 at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Lake Forest Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Phil may be given to the Charles A. Conklin Post 28.
