Ralph D. "Sonny'" Guiles Sr.'s Obituary
Ralph D. "Sonny" Guiles Sr., age 84, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 11, 1940, to Ralph and Lois (Lotta) Guiles in Sedalia, MO, eventually calling Michigan home for nearly 50 years. On July 12, 2004, he married the former Gale Davey in Muskegon, MI. Together they cherished 30 years full of love, laughter and endless adventures.
He was a true patriot, serving in the U.S. Army for over 20 years, proudly dedicating himself to the service of his country. He was stationed for four years in Germany and served two tours in the Vietnam War where his courage and sense of duty earned him the respect of his comrades along with the Bronze Star Medal with the V device for Valor. He retired from the Army in 1978, but his commitment to service never wavered. Even after hanging up his uniform, he continued to live a life of integrity and pride, always looking for new ways to make a difference. Outside of his military service, he went on to retire from Mona Shores schools after 25 years in the maintenance department.
Ralph was a skilled handy man who could fix anything and enjoyed building fireplaces and improving his homes. He had a love for life and a sense of humor that was second to none. Whether he was pressing his luck at the casino, taking a ride on his beloved motorcycle, or telling stories with a mischievous grin, Ralph was always the life of the party. His sarcastic wit and funny, “smart assery” sense of humor always brought a smile to your face. Above all he was a dedicated family man, who will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandpa, whose strength, humor, and wisdom left a lasting impact on those who knew him. His grandchildren adored him, and he was known for being their biggest fan and their funniest storyteller. He will truly be missed by many.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Gale Guiles; seven children, Ralph “Dean” (Tammy) Guiles Jr., Jeff (Cathy) Guiles, Mark Guiles, Angel Martin, Sabrina Guiles, Steven (Jennifer Haight) Lambert and Nicole (fiancé Jarrett Cunningham) Guiles; seven grandchildren, Josh, Rachel, Emily, Hunter, Alissa, Jeffrey Jr. and Jessica; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; several brothers and sisters; granddaughter, Bonnie Jean; and daughter-in-law, Linda Guiles.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444 with visitation one-hour prior. A Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at The Lee Chapel.
