Randall Jay Overweg's Obituary
Randall Jay Overweg, age 71, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 23, 2016 at Spectrum Heart Center in Grand Rapids. He was born on December 14, 1944 in Holland, Michigan. He graduated from Zeeland High School in 1963.
He was a Vietnam Veteran having proudly served his country from 1963 until he was honorably discharged in 1971. He was stationed at various bases in the US during his time of service and he also served two tours in Thailand. He was a member of the North Muskegon VFW Don Rea Post 8846 and the American Legion Post 173 in Holiday, Florida.
He married Wilma Luckett on April 19, 1969.
He participated with the North Muskegon Lions Club for 10 years and served 17 years as the President of the Charles D. Hammond Chapter of the F.O.P.
Randy retired as deputy sheriff in 2004 from the Muskegon County Sheriff department. During Randy's retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife, first in their motor home across the country, and then later settling into Holiday, Florida where they would spend 5 1/2 months each year. Randy loved going to Florida.
Randy enjoyed golfing, watching old westerns, socializing and loved his annual pheasant hunting trip with his son and family.
He will always be remembered for his abundant generosity, for his ability to see the best in the everyone, and for his devotion to his family; especially to his granddaughters whom he thought hung the moon and stars.
Randy was preceded in death by his parents, George Overweg and Mary & John Miedema; brother, John Miedema; nephew, Mannes Todd Overweg; father-in-law, Paul Luckett & sister-in-law, Sally Luckett.
Randy is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Wilma Overweg; his son, Jeff Overweg (Andrea); his beloved granddaughters, Aidan Georgina and Cameron Gabrielle; his twin sister, Rosemary (Jim) Robbins; brothers, Monte (Dianne) Overweg and Steve (Debbie) Overweg; sisters, Shann Walburn, Joni (Trent) Taylor, Paula (Rick) Gallas, and Brenda (Carl) Groetter; mother-in-law, Eileen Luckett; and brother-in-law, Chuck (Esther) Luckett. He is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews whom he adored.
A FUNERAL SERVICE with full military honors will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church (1206 Whitehall Road). Randy would be most proud that his nephews, Kevin Cassette, Luke Overweg & Sgt. Joshua Major will be participating with the military rites. Pastor Bill Uetricht will be officiating. VISITATION with the family will take place on Friday, May 27 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. (231) 798-1100. For those desiring, memorial contributions in Randy's name can be directed to Ele's Place, which provides counseling and services for children or to the VFW Don Rea Post Relief Fund, which provides veteran assistance.
