You see... I was blessed
She was my friend
...and if you're so inclined I'll tell you about how absolutely wonderful she was, how I was very lucky to have known her for the past 25 years.
Renae and I met at a part time job at the local video store. She trained me, was older than me but we were fast friends.
We were very different, she was married, a mother of 2 beautiful little ones and I was 18 yrs old, single, no kids. We didn't go out to bars or parties... our friendship was forged at her kitchen table. Night after night, for hours and hours we'd sit, talk, laugh, eat, sometimes cry but most of all we just were together. I never called to say I was coming over... I just came over, I usually didn't knock, I just walked in and yelled "knock knock" and I don't ever remember a time when she didn't drop everything to sit down and have a chat. She was my friend, I was blessed.
As my life went on, I moved to Minnesota, got married, pregnant and got divorced...she was always a phone call away...
When I found myself 20 yrs old, alone and pregnant I wasn't really alone. Renae was there every step of the way. She was my birth coach, (I remember we let all the other couples in that class just think we were lesbians, and laugh and laugh) she was there for my sonogram when we found out "Our Hannah Ruth" was actually going to be an "Andrew Kristopher." When I went into labor she was there, when I went in for an emergency C-section she donned a silly get up and stood by my side. She was my friend, I was blessed!
It was at her kitchen table that she held my hand and told me she had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she also said she'd fight like hell.. and I knew she would. She was my friend, I was blessed!
She met Kyle and in no uncertain terms told me not to let this guy get away. When he proposed in 1999 she was my first phone call... because I was going to need a Matron Of Honor. Her MS was starting to have an effect on her gait, but many people didnt know she had it... she told me... "If I trip or fall, just tell everyone I'm already drunk!" She didn't fall, she stood tall, by my side the entire day. She was my friend, I was blessed!
In 2001 when Sophie was born, despite how the MS was taking things away from her, she got in her car with her daughter and drove across the state from Muskegon to Lapeer to be there for Sophie's baptism, to be her godmother. Sophie's full legal name is Sophia Renae, and she forever carries the name of my friend, I was blessed!
Despite MS robbing her, her family and her friends she remained part of your life. A birthday didnt go by without a card, even when she could no longer write, she dictated letters for you. When I'd send her Tulips (her favorite) I always got a thank you card. The last time we "spoke," a few months ago, I sent Facebook messages to her daughter to read to her and she'd tell her what to write back. I wish I had sent more tulips.
If you're still reading this I ask for only one thing, please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers, her mother, siblings, especially her children who I had the privilege of watching grow up.
I have 25 years of memories I will forever cherish, I have 100's of stories I could tell. For the rest of my life I will have a smile on my face when Renae drifts into my thoughts...
You see...I was blessed
She was my friend
I love you Renae
