Phil was a friend before he returned to the seminary to become Fr. Phil. He fulfilled his life's calling with that return. He was my singing partner at St. Paul Campus Parish in Big Rapids, my coach when I needed to quickly learn a song he already knew, an enjoyable dinner guest, a great comfort to me when my mother was dying, and when he sang for her funeral, and, above all, my friend. He fixed his eyes on her hills, Jerusalem, his destiny, and is now truly alive in the new Jerusalem.
I will always miss my friend, Fr. Phil.

My Dearest Philip~

When we first met when I was 17 years old, we quickly became "partners in crime". You have always been one of my very favorite people in the world and a part of the Lanza family. So much so that our family chose you to compose and deliver the eulogy for my mother's funeral so long ago. What a loving tribute it was...........thank you for that..........we knew it would be.

I'm so grateful to have experienced your warm, kind, thoughtful nature and will always cherish the memories we've shared. Over the past 43 years, you were always there to laugh with me, cry with me and to just listen, something you were so good at!

I'll never forget when you told me you were entering the priesthood I asked if I could still swear in front of you (joking) and you just chuckled and said in that comforting voice "of course!"

I know you will always be by my side (I felt you next to me yesterday and it made me smile). I'll take comfort that you are with God, Helen and Joe, but I will forever miss you my friend.

Father Phil has been the best pastor I have encountered in my 50+ year faith journey. His sermons kept the listener riveted, and the messages were always sincere and meant to guide us sinners to Heaven. He will be missed greatly by his flock here on Earth, but I am certain he is now with Jesus in Heaven smiling down upon us.

I've got a real candle lit next to the crucifix he gave me. He is the best Pastor I have ever come across in my lifetime. He definitely brought many closer to God and put his heart, soul and entire being into every Mass. He will be missed and I am thankful to God for bringing him to St. Francis and building it up like he did. He definitely left our church and it's people better than he found us.
