Richard Baart Duffield's Obituary
Mr. Richard Baart Duffield “Dick”, age 75, of Spring Lake, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2024, at home surrounded by his family. He was born December 23, 1948, in Detroit to Robert and Maureen (Sheehan) Duffield. In 1967 he married Phoebe Bedford in Lake Orion, Michigan.
Dick retired from General Motors after a 30-year career. He was kind, intelligent, funny and had an unwavering family first governor. Dick was an avid sports fan and never missed a son’s game. He took that same focus and transitioned into a terrific, loving and silly grandfather. Dick was an accomplished swimmer and a recent inductee to the U of D Hall of Fame. He had a passion for tennis, boating, music, golf and investing, Dick enjoyed the abundant nature and beauty of western Michigan. He was a devoted and loving husband to Phoebe for 57 years. Dick always took joy and satisfaction in the success of others. He will be intensely missed by his family, friends, and especially his beloved grandchildren.
Dick is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phoebe; three sons: Baart (Rose) Duffield, Matthew Duffield, Richard (Whitney) Duffield; and seven grandchildren: Lyndsey, Del, Avery, Karleigh, Emelia, Mac, and Mia; brothers: Harry (Terry) Duffield, Bob (Dan) Duffield, Larry (Donna) Duffield; in-laws: Diane (Ginny) Bedford, Sharon (Peter) Armbrust, Edward “Buck” Bedford, Sara(Michael Penori) Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Maureen; brother, Thomas Duffield.
A visitation will take place, 4-6 PM Sunday, December 22, 2024 at The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave, Grand Haven, MI 49417. The family is planning a Celebration of Dick’s life in Detroit on May 22, 2025. A time a location will be announced later.
