Richard "Dick" Grammel's Obituary
Richard ("Dick") Alan Grammel, age 89, peacefully transitioned into Glory on June 24, 2021, surrounded by family. Dick was born in Muskegon on May 22, 1932, to parents Charles and Dessie (Patrick). He was the third of four children born into this loving family. Following his 1950 Muskegon Heights High School graduation, he proudly served in the US Navy on the USS Midway during the Korean War. After his military service, he earned his pharmacy degree from Ferris Institute School of Pharmacy. On May 23, 1959, he married Shirley L. Mattson and together, over the next 62 years, they built a life of love that included three children, who all survive: Denise (Richard) Parker of Delton, MI, Lisa (Eric) Formberg of Troy, MI, and Rick (Lynn) Grammel of Kalamazoo, MI. Dick will be forever cherished as Papa to five grandchildren; Christa (Brad) Babjack, Chad (Chelsea) Formberg, Jib Grammel, Jena (Jake) Toth and Kyle Parker; and two great grandchildren; Cooper Formberg and Elijah Babjack. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings and one grandchild, Aaron Patrick Parker.
Dick enjoyed a satisfying and successful 40+ year pharmacy career, spanning east and west Michigan, retiring in 1997. He was blessed with a rich and full life as a devoted husband and loving father known for his gentle, kind, generous and peace- making spirit. Dick was a committed follower of Jesus, His Savior and served Him faithfully throughout his life. From the age of 16, he had a passion for sailing, making many treasured memories for 60+ years with family and friends on "DeLiRic" and "Skal".
The Grammel family wishes to convey a special word of thanks to 9th floor nursing staff Mercy Health Mercy Campus for their exceptional compassion and care for him and the family during his final days of his earthly journey. The family rests knowing that Dick's ultimate healing has taken place and he is finally home. A Celebration of Dick's Life is scheduled for 12:00 Noon, Friday, July 16, at Forest Park Covenant Church 3815 Henry St, Norton Shores, MI 49441. Visitation will be one hour prior at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be directed to Forest Park Covenant Church or Love, INC.
