So many memories come to mind when I think of Uncle Dick. Picking one in particular would have to be an impromptu Van Luven family picnic during the summer of 1997. We had stopped at a beautiful park on Lake Huron, which the kids soon learned had nature trails that they begged to explore. Up popped Uncle Dick from his seat, settled his hat on his head and called out: "Well, let's go!" and he led his boisterous band of followers all over that park, was the hero of the day - with both the kids and their moms.
That is how I will remember Uncle Dick: full of passion and eager for the next adventure. I always enjoyed connecting with him after he returned from a trip to hear what his time had been, if he had shaved off a few minutes. There was always a good tale to accompany the report.
And technology...oh, Uncle Dick was cutting edge always and he loved new advancements. I remember him connecting with people around the globe via his ham radio from years ago, and his dapper selfies on Facebook in more recent years. He loved meeting new people and gaining knowledge of their culture. He loved learning and mastering new skills. He inspired people. Even at 80 years plus, he still had a twinkle in his eye whenever I saw him.
Also will remember him as a man of unshakable faith. He inspired people on that level too. Not by shaming people for their sins or claiming himself to be better than anyone else, but by simply living his faith and being a powerful example of walking with the Lord. I was blessed to have him in my life, honored to call him family.
