Dear Family of Dick (as we knew him),

I was saddened to read of Dick's passing in the paper, especially since we hadn't met for so many years due to the distance in miles. My late husband, Peter and he met as young economists at Standard Oil many years ago and remained dear friends until Peter's death 10 years ago. I have happy memories of knowing Dick and Marge throughout the years, especially visiting them in Texas. Dick bravely tried to teach me the local dance! I often watched in amazement the speed with which he zipped through the NY Times crossword puzzle! He was a dear and kind, true gentleman. My condolences go out to his children and grandchildren.

I happened to see the obituary of Dick Kruizenga in the NY Times and it brought back some long ago memories. My father, Rev. Russell Redeker, was the pastor of the Spring Lake Reformed Church for sixteen years beginning in about 1941. Mr. Kruizenga's parents were members of the church and they and their children were wonderful friends of ours. I believe that my father saw Dick's father as a mentor and he and Dick's mother, Kathryn, ran a large Vacation Bible School together in the summer. I was 13 when we moved from Spring Lake, but I remember the Kruizengas and their wonderful family vividly and appreciate their many kindnesses to our family as they shared their home and summer cottage on Spring Lake with us. My sympathy to the Kruizenga family on his death and I join in celebrating an incredible life well lived.

Dear Kruizenga family members,
We met your father and mother at Freedom Village where our parents were also living. We think back fondly of our many conversations during Saturday morning pancake breakfasts. We had so many interests in common from art, international travel and learning about other cultures. We are most appreciative of the Kruizenga Art Museum which he so generously championed at Hope College, which is a now such a wonderful blessing for our community. We miss Dick and send our sympathies to all of you knowing that his spirit and legacy live on through all of you.

Dick and his colleagues hired me when I was 21 in 1958 to work in the General Economics Department at Standard Oil Co (NJ). He was a great boss, even helped me get a new job when I decided to leave, and became a great friend. I think I last saw him in about 1990 at a meeting of a business/labor group he asked me to be part of after I had left NYC and moved to North Carolina to work at UNC. I also knew Marge, of course, and had been wondering about them and how they were until I saw today's sad but helpful obit. I came to know Dick only in the last few years of his life, when I moved in to Freedom Village. His museum project captured my imagination, and his thoughts on contemporary issues were well worth discussing. He left behind a great legacy and many friends. Curt Kamman
