Richard Eric Varela's Obituary
Richard Eric Varela, age 74, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. He was born on July 3, 1951, in Muskegon, MI, to Bartolo and Rosa (Martinez) Varela.
Richard graduated from Muskegon High School in 1969 before continuing his education at Muskegon Community College, where he studied machine tool technology. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973, attaining the rank of Specialist Fourth Class.
Following his military service, Richard worked for Dresser Crane and Hoist and Howmet Misco Turbine Components. A few years later, he and two of his cousins relocated to California, where he spent several years employed by Hughes Aircraft Company while also pursuing his passion for photography as a photojournalist in Hollywood. During that time, he photographed numerous Hollywood stars and amassed an impressive collection of memorabilia and autographs.
Richard eventually returned to Muskegon, where he enjoyed a long career as a machinist with Kaydon Corporation until his retirement. Outside of work, he was a gifted musician and was widely recognized as one of the area's finest drummers, performing with several local bands over the years.
SURVIVORS include his sisters, Elaine K. (Jeff) Johnston of Muskegon and Carol J. (Carlos) Varela of New Mexico; special godfather, Louie Martinez, and godmother, Theresa Panzero; goddaughter, Felicia (Matthew) Butner and their son, Bronson; nieces: Angel Telles and her daughter, Yasmine, and Melina (Benjamin) Barrett and their children, Krista and Luna.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Xochitl Haager.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held from 2-5 PM on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Muskegon Recreation Club, 1763 Lakeshore Dr., Muskegon, MI 49441, with full Military Honors at 3:00 PM.
