Richard F. "Dick" Shanty's Obituary
Mr. Richard F. “Dick” Shanty, age 70, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2004 in Muskegon. He was born December 27, 1933 in Muskegon to Frank and Mildred (Sowa) Shanty and lived in the area his entire life. Dick served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1951-1954. On August 23, 1952, he married the former Shirley M. VanVeelen in Muskegon and she survives him. Prior to retirement, he worked as a toolmaker/patternmaker for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and model ship building. SURVIVORS include his wife, Shirley; son, Richard (Kelli) Shanty; daughters, Lisa (Scott) Vanstrate, Suzanne (Bob) Stuck, Carrie Shanty, and Shelley (Dan) Smart; grandchildren, Nick and Nate Nowak, Jordan, Samantha and Haley Smart, Adam and Brent Shanty, Torrie Umphrey and Trent Stuck; brother, Jeff (Jan) Shanty; sisters, Beverly Pleimling, Norma (Clarence) Morgan, Linda Longsdorf; brothers-in-law, Art Davis, John (Gerry) VanVeelen, Henry (Judy) VanVeelen; sister-in-law, Louise Cass; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Arlene Davis, and brother-in-law, Ray Pleimling. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at The Walburn Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 1547 W. Sherman Blvd., (231) 759-8565, with Rev. Mike Harrison officiating.
