Robert P. "Bob" DeVries' Obituary
Robert P. "Bob" DeVries, age 67, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 8, 2025, surrounded by his wife after a courageous six-year battle with cancer. He was born on February 21, 1958, to Robert and Pauline (Parker) DeVries in Muskegon, MI, where he spent most of his life. Bob graduated from Mona Shores High School in 1976 and went on to earn both his bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from Michigan State University. Known for his sharp mind and diverse skills, Bob thrived in various fields, including contracting and architecture, ultimately retiring from his work with the City of Norton Shores. On December 20, 2018, Bob married Sheila Smith, and together they shared six years filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. An avid outdoorsman, Bob found joy in the beauty of nature, often spending time hiking and backpacking with his brother, Chuck, at places like Lake Harbor Park, Hoffmaster State Park, and beyond. He had a special love for the water, especially the shores of Lake Michigan. Bob was also a talented woodworker who took pride in crafting intricate trains. His passion for Michigan State University was unmatched; he remained a devoted Spartans fan through and through, proudly donning the Green and White. Above all, Bob treasured the time he spent with family. He will be remembered as a loyal, determined, and loving man whose unwavering strength and presence left a lasting impact on those who knew him. Bob will be deeply missed by many. He is survived by his wife, Sheila DeVries; seven stepchildren; 8 step grandchildren; sister, Kathy Kozak; brother, Charles DeVries; niece, Marianne Barkholizt; nephew, Tom (Amy) Beckman; three great nieces; great nephew; two great-great nieces; and many dear friends.
