Mr. Robert "Bob" King's Obituary
Robert F. King born March 9, 1926 passed away on September 16, 2014. Bob was born in Marquette, MI to R. Alice and Ben C. King. After high school he enlisted in the Navy to serve in World War II and was a Merchant Marine on USS LST 1085 and 716. He attended Concordia College River Forest and then moved to Muskegon in 1956 and took a job as an inspector with the Michigan Department of Transportation. He worked for the State of Michigan until he retired in 1989. He married Elaine M. Yelsik on March 2, 1957. He was a lifelong member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served as chairman of the congregation, elder, usher, was a hand bell choir member, and Sunday school superintendent. He was proud to serve in the Honor Guard for VFW Post #7729 and handled the 21-gun salute for many veterans in this community. After retirement, Bob became an active community volunteer. He volunteered for the American Red Cross, Muskegon Museum of Art, the Muskegon Historical Railroad Association and the Y’s Men’s Club and as a Viking Lodge bartender. He took great pride in being a 27-gallon blood donor and was named Health and Safety and Blood volunteer of the year by the Red Cross, where he volunteered for 45 years. Bob was an avid traveler and enjoyed seeing places as far flung as Egypt and Australia and as warm as the Florida Keys and St. John in the Virgin Islands. Bob was generous with his time, his kind words and humor and those personal traits are how many people will remember him. Bob is survived by his only child, Roberta F. King and her husband, Mike Miesch; his twin brother, Richard; and granddaughter, Tasha Miesch. Surviving him also are nephews, Paul Yelsik and Todd and Scott King; and great-nephews, Steve and Mike Yelsik. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; grandson, Noah Miesch; brother, Bill King; and nephew, Gary Yelsik. The family acknowledges the friendship of caregiver, Derek Sander. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church 1215 Apple Ave. with Rev. Robert J. Conradt officiating and Full Military Rites afforded under the auspices V.F.W. Muskegon County Council. VISITATION will be Friday evening from 5-8PM at The Sytsema Chapel 737 Apple Avenue, 231-726-5210 Burial will take place in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to these two funds at the Community Foundation for Muskegon County: Muskegon Museum of Art Endowment Fund or The American Red Cross, Muskegon -Oceana Chapter Endowment Fund.
