Mr. Robert W. "Bob" Kurant's Obituary
Robert W. “Bob” Kurant, age 80, passed away Monday, May 11, 2015 after a courageous fight with cancer and lung damage. He was born May 8, 1935 in Muskegon to Edward and Emma Kurant. Bob was a graduate of Muskegon St. Mary’s and Western Michigan University. He was the former President of Manisteel, Inc. (Beacon Steel of Muskegon, Manisteel of Manistee, and Alpena Steel and Wire of Alpena, MI) and after retirement was a bus driver for Mona Shores Public Schools. Bob was an all-around athlete and quarterback for St. Mary’s High. A shoulder injury ended his playing as defensive half back at Western. After graduation from Western, he quarterbacked the semi pro Muskegon Black Hawks. He also played basketball for the championship U.S. 31 Barbeque team and baseball for Snow White bakery. He loved golfing and fishing with family and friends. Bob was a former officer in the Worlds Trade Club and also a former member of the Muskegon Rotary Club. He was a member of the Muskegon Elks Lodge #274, the Lakeside Vets, and Knights of Columbus, and also bowled and golfed in the Elks league. He leaves behind his wife, the former Beverly Hammond. They would have had their 58th wedding anniversary in July. He also leaves behind a daughter, Kelley Ann (Kevin) Burch of Chicago; sons: James, Robert, and Kyle (Char) Kurant all of Norton Shores. He leaves the joys of his life: granddaughter, Kara; grandsons: Connor and Brett; and great-grandsons: Carter and Riley; and his grand dog “Buster.” Bob would have wanted special “Thank You’s” to the Muskegon Cancer Center, Mercy 3 West, Great Lakes Specialty, and his classmates of “53” St. Mary’s. He was preceded in death by his parents and baby brother, James. THE FUNERAL MASS will be celebrated 11:00 AM Saturday, May 16, 2015, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church – Marian Chapel with the Rev. Fr. Philip P. Salmonowicz presiding. VISITATION will be one hour prior to the service. MEMORIALS to the American Cancer Society will be appreciated.
