I had Mr. Lubbers for Chemistry in 1972 and I loved his class. But the memory I want to tell you about is he was also the JV basketball coach at the time. I was the tallest kid in the 10th grade but was NOT a good basket ball player but I tried out anyway along with 25 other guys.. When the final team was posted we all gathered around and my name was on the list !!! I went to him a said "coach there are a LOT of players that are better than me!. He said " I can teach you to play Basket ball better, But I can not teach the others to be 6'8" !" I will never forget him for giving me the instruction on how to play. My prayers are for his family and friends who now have a HUGE hole to fill.

Bob was both a high school and college classmate. We lived together during the last two years of college and shared many fun and interesting experiences. I re-connected with him several years ago and shared many interesting phone conversations and email exchanges. I will miss his sense of humor and unique perspective on life and science. Ron Wolthuis

Mr. Lubbers was my chemistry teacher in high school. He was the first adult I respected to believe in me, and he asked me to be his lab assistant the next year. I took the position, and still remember his influence on my life.

Dear Judy,
Bob and I were very sorry to hear that you have lost Bob, we had great fun playing Pickle Ball with you both and having you for neighbours for 12 years in Timber Creek. We had great neighbourhood parties at various venues. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time of grief.
We always enjoyed our conversations by the pool after pickleball they were always interesting conversations and often thought provoking.

So sorry to learn of the passing of Bob. Jane and I and Bob and Judi were in a Friday evening couples' golf league at Terra Verde Golf Course together for many years and we always enjoyed being with them and especially Bob's great sense of humor. We had many good times playing golf with Bob and Judi, and know he will be missed by family and friends.

I’m forever grateful for having Mr. Lubbers as a teacher. He was more than a chemistry teacher, he was a mentor, and role model. I had him as a teacher and he inspired me to learn more about chemistry. He recommended me for a nuclear chemistry at GRCC when I was still in high school. He recommended me for admission and a scholarship at GVSU; I was admitted and awarded a full ride Presidential Scholarship. It was in large part due to his support.

I recall a group of us would hang out in his classroom to listen to his jokes and play magic games. This was around 1976 and Central High was a place of safety and respite for many of us. He provided a sense of security and safety that was missing in our neighborhoods and homes. His kind and humorous demeanor gave us an example and hope that there was a better world for us.

Thank you, Mr. Lubbers. And although it’s been years since I have seen you, I will miss you but know that you are standing among fellow angels telling jokes and teaching there also.

I extend my deepest condolences to the Lubbers family.

Our condolences to Judi and the family. We met Bob when we were renting a unit near his in Timber Creek. He looked us over and said," You two should be playing pickleball. Come tomorrow and we'll get you started." He was an excellent pickleball teacher and made sure we were always welcome. Rest in peace Bob.

I took chemistry with Mr. Lubbers in 1986-87 at Central High. He inspired me to pursue the mysteries of chemistry. His unique passion for teaching students was one of the many gifts he possessed. I routinely inform my students how my love for chemistry began with my high school chemistry teacher. As a professor I find myself using many of his approaches to reach and intrigue students in organic chemistry.

God bless him and his family. He will be missed but not forgotten.
