Robert M. "Bob" Carlson's Obituary
Mr. Robert M. “Bob” Carlson, age 81, passed away on September 28, 2018 at his home. He was born on June 23, 1937 in Pittsburgh, PA to Carl and Effie (Umstead) Carlson. Bob retired from the Saginaw Police Department after almost 19 years of service where he was a road officer, detective, and school resource officer. He loved being a Police Instructor for the Police Academy at Delta College and training future officers. Bob was associated in implementing EST (Emergency Services Team) and SWAT for the City of Saginaw. He also served in the 191st Michigan Air National Guard (and Army National Guard) for almost 20 years. Bob dedicated his life to serve the Lord as an Elder and Committee Member for St. John’s Lutheran Church. He had a great love for boxer dogs, hunting, camping, painting and drawing. In August of 1984, Bob married Joyce Robar, and she survives him after 34 years of marriage along with four children, Kimberly (Robert) Doud, James (Jill) Carlson), Michael Carlson, and Lee (Andrea) Carlson; fur-children, Cheli and Jasmin; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 12 grand-furbabies; and step-siblings, Dortha Coakly, John (Sandra) Meyer, and Rebecca (Steve) Robertson. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and step-mother, Dortha Carlson. Bob will be deeply missed by his wife and family. They would like to send a heartfelt thank-you to the Spectrum Hospice Team. FUNERAL SERVICES will be 1PM Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at St. John’s Lutheran Church (527 Taylor Ave.) with Pastor Kurt Wenzelburger officiating. VISITATION with the family will be 2-4 & 6-8PM Tuesday at The VanZantwick Chapel, 620 Washington Ave. 616-842-6100, and 1 hour prior to the service at church, from 12-1PM. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery in Muskegon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Ottawa County Humane Society or St. John’s Lutheran Church will be appreciated.
