Robert B. Mc Arthur's Obituary
Early Sunday morning, March 22, Robert sailed his final journey to the Kingdom of his Heavenly Father, reuniting with those he loved who had passed before him. Instead of dockhands, it was the Angels from Harbor Hospice who helped him as he prepared for his voyage. When ready, he peacefully backed away from the slip, and lovingly waved farewell to his best friend and first mate, Christine. For several years, Robert faced Parkinson’s disease and dementia with grace and dignity. His passion for sailing was never lost, but was replaced with rides to enjoy the sunsets at Lake Michigan, ice cream cone in hand. An accomplished pianist, he no longer knew the notes or keys, however he encouraged the grandkids in their musical efforts. After many years as a season ticket holder, the West Michigan Symphony was now out of reach, but he savored concerts on Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Radio. As an award-winning amateur photographer, his camera was out of focus, but he enjoyed the beauty in life by watching the birds and seasons at home. Robert felt blessed by God’s love and wanted to share his blessings by helping others in any way he could. As a member of Calvary Church, he served by making lasagne and meatloaf dinners for the families of the church. He volunteered for the Red Cross, the Mel Trotter Ministries Thanksgiving Dinner program in Grand Rapids, and served over 25 years as a Board Member of the Muskegon Conservation Club. When friends and family needed help, they could always count on Robert. Robert was born September 14, 1938 to James and Dorella Mc Arthur in Toledo, Ohio. After earning a degree in Computer Science he was employed as a Computer Systems Analyst with Owens-Illinois of Toledo. Lake Michigan beckoned, and Robert found himself in Muskegon, where he was employed as a Systems Analyst for the SD Warren Co. Upon retirement, Robert enjoyed sailing, sailing, and more sailing. Family and friends were always welcome aboard the “Independence Day”. As life became more challenging, Robert enjoyed his visits to Life Circles where he could mingle with others under the guidance of a very caring staff. Robert was preceded in death by his parents James and Dorella, siblings Richard, Dorthella “Sally”, Jim, and Mary. He is survived by his loving family including his wife and caregiver, Christine; daughters Lori (Steve) Myers and Lynn Morris (Bill Campbell); stepdaughters Lisa (Mike) Cardinal, Julie (Mike) Gagle, and Sara (Terry) DeKoninck; grandchildren Jon, Kali, Alec, Audrey, Charlie, and Sam; great-grandchildren Nolan and Charlotte; and sister Kathy. The family wishes to thank Dr. Caitlyn Fulton, Amy Williams and staff of Life Circles, and the staff at Harbor Hospice. Their exceptional care assured that his journey had ‘fair winds and following seas’. A memorial service will be held this summer, arranged through The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Harbor Hospice or Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
