James Kelly
Rob was a very close friend for more than fifty years, a friendship that began back in the early 1960’s when we were students at Milwaukee’s Layton School of Art. In addition to his artistic talents, Rob was a fascinating conversationalist who loved to talk about art, music, literature, movies, interesting people and world events. He was an avid reader and a perceptive observer of everything that matters.
Following art school, Rob returned to his beloved home state of Michigan and, with the exception of some inspirational sojourns in Europe, he spent the rest of his life in Michigan as a practicing artist and teacher, producing award-winning paintings of the places and people he loved.
Rob and I remained in touch over the years, talking regularly by phone and getting together several times a year for across-the-lake visits, often exploring Rob’s favorite places along western Michigan’s spectacular coastline. You have added much to our lives, old friend, as you have for so many others. You will be greatly missed but will never be forgotten!
