Robert C. "Bob" Slocum's Obituary
Robert “Bob” Slocum, age 90, passed away on Monday July 13, 2015. Bob was born on November 11, 1924 to George and Clara Slocum. After high school he left to fight for his country in the Navy during WWII. He served on the USS New Jersey. Bob was very proud of his service. After the war he married the former Carmen Kitchen and together they were blessed with 5 children. After the war Bob found work as a machinist for Teledyne Continental Motors. He worked there for 39 years before his retirement in 1984. Bob was a member of VFW post 3195, past member of The Muskegon Eagles. He enjoyed going to the annual USS New Jersey reunions as well as brook trout fishing, hunting, baseball, and camping. He was a funny, honest, kind man who will be deeply missed. Bob is survived by his children, Bob (Karen) Slocum of Whitehall, Stephen Slocum of Fruitport Township, Deborah (Donald) Verwey of Grand Haven, and Paul (Kathy Fialek) Slocum of Fruitport Township; grandchildren, John, Joni, Joel, Susan, Gerald, Jeffrey, Jessica, Lindsey, and Andrew; great grandchildren, Rachel, Anna, Alex, Avery, and Hayden; sister, Virginia (Tom) Wall; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Carmen; daughter Joni Sue; parents; brothers George, Louis, and Donald; Daughters-in-law Judi Slocum and Paula Slocum. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 11AM on Thursday July 16, 2015 at The Lee Chapel 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100. VISITATION will be on Wednesday from 5-8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association or Grace Hospice.
