When I was a child my parents were friends of Bob and his wife while my brothers and sisters and myself were friends with Gail, Kathy and Rex. When I became an adult my husband Lee and I were friends of Bob, then a couple years ago our son Eric became friends with Bob. That is who Bob was, a man who befriended so many, Bob accepted us all just the way we are regardless of age or any other consideration. My prayers are with Bob's family. He truly was a special person. He was the kindest man I knew. Memories of him helping at St.John's and just talking with him will be treasured.

I love Bob Steele and am deeply saddened by his passing.

Reading the other messages here and all the comments about Bob -- they are so on the mark! May we truly learn from his life --- he was as close as one can get to being "Christ-like". He was a prime example of a faithful servant at his church - St. John's Lutheran. He loved his church and he loved to serve, and since 1984, he made it his life's work.

Mary Bishop is right -- the church office (and all who work here) will truly miss Bob. Looking at all the tasks that Mary mentioned...Bob continued to do as much of these as he was able almost right up to the end of his life. And do you know how many people it takes to fill his big shoes? I counted 15 this morning.

Bob was the most faithful volunteer a person could ever hope to have. He was always willing to come and help whenever I asked him. He started helping in the church office by entering names and addresses etc. on the first computer the church owned. After we completed the data entry he helped record attendance and communion participation. He also mimeographed the church Sunday bulletins newsletters, board minutes, and other projects. On Friday morning, after stuffing inserts into the bulletins he placed special envelopes, pencils and attendance pads in the pews. Bob was also in charge of finding lectors for the Sunday worship services.
Bob was very friendly, good natured and just a very nice man. I ever heard him complain or say a bad word about anyone. There were many times when I knew he would like to say something but always kept it to himself. The other church volunteers always looked forward to working with him. He always contributed a little humor to the conversations.
I remember one time when I was cleaning the folding machine he offered his help. We took it apart and cleaned the rollers. The problem occurred when we put it back together. We placed one part in wrong. When Bob turned the machine on and started to fold the papers it spit them out and shot them across the room. I'll never forget the look on Bob's face before he started to laugh.
Sometimes I miss working in the church office, but one thing I know for sure is that the church office (and all who work there) will miss Bob.##imported-begin##Mary Jane Bishop##imported-end##
