Robert Lee "Bob" Whalen's Obituary
Robert Lee “Bob” Whalen passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025, in Muskegon. He was born on May 29, 1936, to Joseph and Helen (Benedict) Whalen in Muskegon. Bob graduated from Muskegon Heights High School, served in the U.S. Army, and earned a degree from Baker College. His career included working at Brunswick and Amstore, where he retired after 30 years as a cost estimator.
In 1977, he married Kathy Mahka Moon, and they raised their family in Norton Shores. Bob’s greatest joy was working on restoration projects. He gave new life to many items, including a 1942 Century Sea Maid wooden boat, a GMC motor home, a 1992 Corvette, 1976 Honda 550 motorcycle, and a Model A. Smaller projects involving 5hp motors, lawn mowers, and snow blowers were always a favorite too.
Bob took pride in yard and home maintenance. He and Kathy enjoyed many miles traveling across the U.S. He especially valued family time, with his favorite activity being playing dominoes on Saturday nights. He was known as the family’s grill master and often cooked up a wicked batch of chili for everyone.
Bob was known for his strong will, tenacity, and creative problem-solving skills. He was loved by his friends and family, and we will so miss his presence in our lives.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his children, Debbie Whalen, Cindy (Ed) Muckey, Robert (Kim) Whalen Jr., and Sharon Whalen. Also surviving are his step-children, Kimberly Moon, Scott (Jolen) Moon, and Brian (Angie) Moon. He leaves behind nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Cory Siekierk, and his brothers Joseph, Edward, and Richard Whalen.
FUNERAL SERVICES will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 20, 2025, at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444. VISITATION with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. MEMORIALS in Bob’s name can be directed to Kids Hope Food Basket. Burial will take place at Norton Cemetery.
