Robert G. Mortensen's Obituary
Mr. Robert G. Mortensen, age 85, passed away at home Wednesday, December 29, 2010, following a long illness. He was born in Riverton Twp., MI on January 11, 1925 to Leo and Gladys (Freeland) Mortensen and moved to Muskegon in 1933. Bob enlisted into the U.S. Army following his graduation from Muskegon Hts. H.S. in 1942 and was a veteran of WWII. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was a veteran of the Battle at Luzon. Following the war, Mr. Mortensen returned home and received his realtor’s license in 1956. He eventually owned Mortensen and Associates, Inc. and maintained his real estate license until retiring in 2007. He was a member of Calvary Church and was a former member of the Muskegon Elks Lodge #274 and the Shriners International. Bob enjoyed golfing, skiing, traveling and the many times entertaining family and guest at their cottage in Thompsonville. He is survived by his loving: wife, Virginia; four children, Cynthia (Steve) Novak of Norton Shores, Randall Mortensen of Twin Lake, Jennifer Simms of Norton Shores and Mary (Richard Geers of Grant; nine grandchildren, Jessica (Jon) Cooper, Nichole (Chad) Mettler, Stephen (Kelli) Mortensen, Laura (Nathan) Kunzman, Sean Simms, Scott Simms, Richard Ward, Krystal Geers and Summer Geers; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Joyce Oosterhart of Muskegon. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at: The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 11, 2011, Pastor Terry Fulk officiating. Military Rites will be provided by the Muskegon County Council of Veterans and the Michigan National Guard. The family will receive guests at the funeral home Monday evening, 6-8 P.M. Memorial Contributions: Calvary Church or V.N.S. Hospice.
